Instagram stories was first created in 2016 to provide users with a similar experience to Snapchat. They succeeded in attracting users and now with over 500 million monthly users, it’s more important on the daily for businesses and brands looking to increase marketing efforts.
It’s even become so addictive that some users have become accustomed to view Instagram only for Instagram stories; it’s increased the amount of time that people spend on the platform by 28 minutes.
It’s a great feature that allows users to post short snippets of video that can even come together to create a stream of stories that are available for only 24 hours. After that, they can be added to an Instagram story album that is pinned to the main profile page of the user.
It also allows for an instant and intimate connection with your followers that allows you to share snippets of your daily life as well as behind-the-scenes operations of your business, brand, creative endeavor, and more.
Instagram stories are accessed in two ways. Instagram creates a feed at the top of the landing page when a user opens the app so that users can see Instagram stories of the accounts they follow.
The second location of Instagram stories is via the profile photo of a visited account; when there is an active Instagram story, a colored ring appears around the profile photo of the account to show the user that there is a story (or stories) to view.
Instagram allows you to re-share your own stories on your story highlights, but if you want to save an awesome story from another user, you won’t be able to do so easily. At least not via the Instagram platform.
Does that mean it’s impossible to download someone else’s story? Of course not! Technology has paved the way for many different things and downloading stories is one of them.
For that reason we’ve created this guide to help you understand how to save not only your own stories but those of others that you enjoy. Let’s take a look!
How to Download Your Own Instagram Story and Save to Your Phone
There are a variety of different ways that you can download your own story. The first, and easiest way, is to use the download button before you post your story.
This button is located at the top of your screen; there are a variety of icons there, and this icon appears as an arrow with a line below it. Once you click that icon, you can save it to your device.
You can also publish your story first; if you happen to forget to save your story to your device, you can follow the below steps to save it to your phone or device.
1. Publish Your Story
If you forgot to save your story before publishing, no problem. Publish it without saving and you can do it from there.
Use all of the tools that the Instagram story function allows, such as GIFs and question tags, and then you can either save it, or post it live. If you don’t save it, follow the next two steps to save it to your device.
2. Click the 3 Dots
After posting your story for the world to see, you can then view your story by clicking on your own profile picture from your profile page. You can also do so from your main Instagram page in the left hand corner.
Once you’re there, at the bottom right of the screen you’ll see three dots in a line. Tap those dots and you’ll get a menu of a variety of actions.
3. Save the Story
In the menu you’ll see options like delete, save, share as post, and more. Click the second option, “save,” and you can then download your story to the device that you’re browsing on.
If you want to download someone else’s story, it’s a bit more complicated, but we’ll get into that in the next section.
How to Download Someone’s IG Story without Them Knowing
If you are interested in downloading someone else’s story, you’ll need to use a third party tool to help you achieve your goal. No matter if you’re an iPhone user, Android user, or desktop user, you’ll need the help of an outside tool.
Don’t worry, it’s still pretty simple. Here’s how you can download another person’s story on Instagram.
iPhone Users: Download Story Reposter
If you’re an iPhone user, this is the easiest way to download someone else’s story.
You’ll need to:
- Go to the App Store and download the app Story Reposter
- Enter the app and search for the username that the story is posted under. The only way you can do this is if the profile is set to public, so if the profile is set to private, unfortunately you can’t download it.
- Select the profile that posted the story and then choose the story you want to save. Click the Download button.
- Once you click download, tap the save button to save the story to your device.
And that’s it! If you know that the profile is private and can’t use the app, there’s still one other way to get the stories that you’re interested in.
On iPhone, there is a screen recording feature. When you’re ready to record, you can swipe to get the recording option; it will start recording in three seconds and then you swipe up to go back to the content you want to record.
Android Users: Download Story Saver
If you’re a user of a phone that has the Android operating system, follow these steps to download an Instagram story:
- Go to the Play Store and download Story Saver
- Connect your Instagram to the Story Saver app by logging in
- You’ll have two options: you can browse all of the stories that your followed accounts have posted, or you can search for the desired username and find the stories there, especially if they’re not on your followers/followed list.
- Click the story you want to download and tap save
- Your downloaded story will appear in the StorySaver folder that is now in your camera roll
Desktop Users: Download StoriesIG or the Chrome IG Story Extension
There are some folks that prefer to use desktop and store their files on their computer; don’t worry, you’re not left out. There are two options that you can use to download Instagram stories to your desktop and we’ll review them below.
Using StoriesIG to Download Instagram Stories
The first option that you have on desktop is to use the StoriesIG website.
This is what you should do:
- Go to storiesig.com
- In the search bar, type in the username of the profile you want to download the story from
- Click on the profile picture of the Instagram profile in the search results
- Scroll down to view their stories
- Select the story and click download; the file will then save to your computer
Using the Chrome IG Extension to Download Instagram Stories
Another option for desktops is to use the Chrome IG Extension, making it easier to download the stories you want directly from Instagram.com
You should follow the steps below:
- Download the Chrome IG Extension
- Search for the username of the story you’d like to download
- Right-click on the user’s profile photo icon and click download
The great thing about this is that the person whose story you’re downloading won’t know that you viewed the story, making it a great option for those who want to avoid being seen or who are sleuthing (you do you, we won’t tell).
