Hashtag Strategy

TikTok Hashtags: How They Work and How to Use Them in 2026

Quick answer: TikTok allows up to five hashtags per post. Use three to five that describe the video's topic, niche and format, and put searchable keywords in the caption and on-screen text. Tags like #fyp don't unlock the For You feed; TikTok recommends videos based on how people interact with them and on video details such as captions, sounds and hashtags.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok has limited posts to 5 hashtags since August 2025.
  • Hashtags are one input among many; viewer interactions weigh heavily in recommendations.
  • #fyp and #foryou describe a feed, not your content, so they waste a slot.
  • Captions, spoken words and on-screen text help TikTok and TikTok search understand your video.
  • TikTok's Creative Center shows trending hashtags by region, with fuller data for logged-in business users.

How hashtags work on TikTok

A hashtag on TikTok is a clickable label in your caption. Tapping it opens a page of videos using the same tag, and hashtags show up in TikTok search.

TikTok's own explanation of the For You feed names three groups of factors in its recommendations:

  • User interactions: videos people like or share, accounts they follow, comments they post and content they create.
  • Video information: details such as captions, sounds and hashtags.
  • Device and account settings: language preference, country setting and device type, which TikTok says get lower weight than the other factors.

So hashtags are part of the "video information" TikTok reads, but viewer behavior carries a lot of weight. A tag can help TikTok place a video in front of people interested in that topic; how those people respond decides what happens next. TikTok has also said follower count and an account's past hits aren't direct factors in the recommendation system.

How many hashtags can you use on TikTok?

Five. In August 2025 TikTok began limiting posts to five hashtags. Users trying to add more saw a prompt; MediaPost reported the message as "Maximum 5 hashtags. Use accurate hashtags to get more views." TikTok didn't publish a detailed explanation at the time.

Hashtags also count toward your caption length. TikTok raised the caption limit to 4,000 characters in 2023, giving plenty of room for a descriptive caption plus tags. Limits can differ slightly by post type and app version, and the in-app counter is the final word.

Instagram introduced its own 5-tag limit for posts and Reels in December 2025, so a single five-tag habit now works on both apps, though the best tags often differ. Our explainer on hashtag limits across platforms compares them side by side.

The #fyp myth

Hashtags like #fyp, #foryou, #foryoupage and #viral are some of the most used on TikTok, and the reasoning is understandable: if you want to be on the For You page, tag it. But there's no evidence they help.

  • TikTok's description of how it recommends videos doesn't mention any special tag that unlocks the For You feed.
  • These tags describe a place in the app, not what your video is about. Since hashtags are used as information about the content, a tag that applies to millions of unrelated videos tells TikTok almost nothing.
  • With only five slots, a generic tag replaces one that could describe your niche.

If you want a platform-level tag at all, our #tiktok hashtag page covers when such tags are reasonable. Most of the time, skip them.

How to choose TikTok hashtags

Build each set of three to five tags from these layers:

  1. Topic: what the video is about (#sourdough, #skincare, #dogtraining).
  2. Niche or angle: the specific sub-topic (#sourdoughforbeginners, #dryskinroutine).
  3. Format: if the format is how people search (#tutorial, #recipe, #beforeandafter, #storytime).
  4. Community or trend: only if you're genuinely part of it (#booktok, a challenge tag, an event).
  5. Optional branded tag: your own series or campaign tag.

Captions, on-screen text and spoken keywords

Because hashtags are limited, the rest of your video's text carries more of the load:

  • Caption: open with a plain description using words people would search ("easy sourdough starter, day 1 to day 7").
  • On-screen text: a short title card at the start clarifies the topic for viewers who arrive with the sound off.
  • Spoken words: say the topic out loud early in the video. Many people use captions or auto-generated subtitles.
  • Sound: a trending sound can tie your video to other videos using it, but only if it suits your content.

Consistency matters too. An account that sticks to a clear topic gives both viewers and TikTok an easier time understanding who the content is for.

TikTok's Creative Center is an official, free resource aimed at advertisers that also helps creators spot trends. Its trends section covers trending hashtags, songs, creators and TikTok videos. TikTok now presents it alongside its TikTok One creative tools.

How to use it:

  1. Go to the TikTok Creative Center on the TikTok for Business site.
  2. Open Trends and choose Hashtags.
  3. Set your region and, where available, a time range and industry filter.
  4. Open a hashtag's details to see how interest has changed over time and related information.
  5. Log in with a TikTok for Business account to unlock fuller data. Some features aren't available in every region.

Treat what you find as research, not a to-do list. A trending tag is only worth using if your video actually belongs there. Checking a tag's top videos in the TikTok app before using it is still the best relevance test, much like the process in our hashtag research guide.

Other ways to research TikTok hashtags

  • TikTok search suggestions. Type your topic in the search bar and note the autocomplete phrases; they reflect what people look for.
  • Hashtag pages. Tap a tag to see its videos. If they don't resemble yours, choose another.
  • Comments. Viewers' questions and wording show you how your audience describes the topic.
  • Your analytics. With TikTok's analytics you can see where views came from, including the For You feed, search and your profile. Compare similar videos with different tag sets over time.

TikTok vs Instagram hashtags

Both apps now cap hashtags at five, but the way people use tags differs enough that you shouldn't paste the same set on both.

When cross-posting, keep the topic tags that work on both, then swap community tags for each platform's version.

Branded hashtags and challenges

A branded hashtag is one you create for your business, series or campaign, such as a recurring "#fridayfixwithsam" series. On TikTok they're useful for:

  • Grouping a series so viewers can tap the tag and watch every episode.
  • Running a challenge where others post their own version with your tag.
  • Tracking user content about your product.

Keep branded tags short, easy to spell and clearly yours. Search the tag before launching to make sure it isn't already used for something unrelated. Remember that a branded tag uses one of your five slots, so pair it with descriptive topic tags rather than using it alone.

A challenge only spreads if the original video is easy and fun to copy, so make the format obvious in the first few seconds and show the tag on screen.

Common TikTok hashtag mistakes

  • Using #fyp, #foryou and #viral as a default set. They crowd out descriptive tags.
  • Copying the same five tags onto every video. Tag each video for its own topic.
  • Tagging trends you aren't part of. It sends your video to the wrong viewers.
  • Reusing Instagram sets without checking. Communities differ (#booktok vs #bookstagram), so check tags on each platform.
  • Relying on tags instead of the video. A clear hook and a video people watch through matter more than any tag.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use trending hashtags on TikTok?

Only when your video genuinely fits the trend. A trending tag on an unrelated video puts it in front of people who aren't looking for that content, which tends to mean quick swipes. A relevant niche tag usually serves you better than a popular irrelevant one.

Do hashtags work on TikTok photo posts?

Yes, photo posts have captions and can use hashtags the same way videos do. Keep them relevant and within the same five-hashtag limit.

Can I edit hashtags after posting on TikTok?

Whether you can edit a published caption has varied by region, post type and app version, so don't count on it. Check your tags before you publish; if you can't edit, the alternative is deleting and reposting, which resets the video's views and comments.

Does follower count affect whether TikTok recommends my video?

TikTok has said follower count and past high-performing videos are not direct factors in its recommendation system. Accounts with more followers naturally get more views from those followers, but a new account's video can still be recommended.
