Facebook Hashtags
Most popular #facebook hashtags for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Select any tags and copy them.
Quick answer: On Facebook, a hashtag turns a word or phrase into a clickable link that opens a feed of posts using it, but people only see posts they already have permission to view. Hashtags work on profiles, Pages and groups. Use one to three relevant tags on Facebook, and trim to 5 when the same post runs on Instagram.

About #facebook content
Facebook's help center describes hashtags simply: type # with a single word or phrase (no spaces; numbers are fine, punctuation and symbols are not), and it becomes a link to a feed of posts using that tag. Crucially, privacy settings still apply. A hashtag on a friends-only post does not make it public.
In practice, Facebook discovery leans on Pages, groups, shares and Reels recommendations more than hashtag browsing. That is why long tag lists look out of place on Facebook. A couple of clear topic or campaign tags, such as an event name or a branded series, are usually enough.
Many businesses publish to Facebook and Instagram together through Meta's tools. The Instagram sets below are built for that cross-posting, and the Facebook set shows the shorter version.
Tips for tagging Facebook posts
- Keep Facebook posts to one to three hashtags and put them at the end or naturally in a sentence. Long lists read as spam to Facebook audiences.
- Check the post audience. A hashtag does not change privacy; only people who can already see the post will find it through the tag.
- Use a branded or event hashtag consistently so people can click it to see everything related. For Instagram versions of the same post, see how many hashtags Instagram allows.
- If you link Facebook and Instagram accounts, our guide to logging in with Facebook and Accounts Center covers the setup. For more business tags, see marketing hashtags.
Hashtags to avoid
| Hashtag | Why skip it |
|---|---|
#facebookviral | Reach wish with no topic; Facebook users rarely browse it. |
#shareforshare | Engagement-bait wording; Meta has long said it demotes posts that bait people into shares or reactions. |
#fb | Platform label that adds nothing on the platform itself. |

#facebook hashtag FAQs
Do hashtags work on Facebook?
Yes. They become clickable links to a feed of posts using the tag. They play a smaller role in discovery than shares, groups and recommendations, so a few relevant tags are enough.
How many hashtags should I use on Facebook?
Facebook does not publish a recommended number, but one to three relevant tags keep posts readable. Using many tags tends to look spammy to audiences there.
Can I use the same hashtags on Facebook and Instagram?
Yes, as long as they fit both audiences. Keep the Instagram version to five tags and consider trimming the Facebook version to the one or two most specific.
