How Facebook login works on Instagram in 2026
Instagram's Help Center no longer documents a separate "linked accounts" switch in Instagram settings. Logging in with Facebook depends on Accounts Center (being renamed Meta Account for some people), the hub that connects your Facebook, Instagram and other Meta profiles.
Two conditions must be true:
- Your Facebook and Instagram accounts are in the same Accounts Center.
- The accounts are allowed to log in to each other.
Instagram's Help Center says that starting in early 2026 the separate Logging in with accounts setting is being retired, and all accounts in the same Accounts Center can log in to each other by default. As part of that change, Instagram says some Facebook and Instagram accounts were moved into different Accounts Centers. If Facebook login stopped working for you this year, that's the first thing to check.
Step 1: Add Facebook to your Instagram Accounts Center
On iPhone and Android
- Log in to the Instagram account you want to connect.
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Tap Accounts Center (or Meta Account).
- At the bottom, tap Add more accounts and follow the on-screen steps to log in to Facebook.
If you're already logged in to Facebook on the same phone, Instagram may suggest that account automatically.
On a computer
- On instagram.com, click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
- On the left, click Accounts Center.
- Click Accounts, then Add accounts, and follow the prompts.
An Accounts Center can contain only one Facebook account. To add a different one, remove the current Facebook account first. If you run Instagram alongside a Facebook Page for your business, note that connecting a Page is a separate setting from adding your personal Facebook account. For posts you share to both, our Facebook hashtags page has tag ideas for that platform.
Step 2: Log in to Instagram with your Facebook details
- Open the Instagram app or go to instagram.com.
- On the login screen, enter the email address or phone number from your Facebook account.
- Enter your Facebook password.
- Tap or click Log in.
- If two-factor authentication is on, enter the code.
You may also see your Facebook account listed as a saved account on the login screen. Instagram shows saved accounts when an account was recently used on the device, when accounts share an Accounts Center and can log in to each other, or on Android when your Google account is associated with a Facebook or Instagram account. Tapping one logs you in without typing details, although you might still be asked for a password.
How to stop logging in to Instagram with Facebook
Because the dedicated login setting is being phased out, the way to disconnect login access is to move one account out of the Accounts Center.
Remove an account on iPhone and Android
- Tap Profile, then Menu in the top right.
- Tap Accounts Center.
- Scroll down and tap Accounts.
- Tap Remove next to the profile you want to disconnect.
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap Continue, then tap Yes, remove [name].
Remove an account on a computer
- Click More > Settings, then Accounts Center on the left.
- Click Accounts, then Remove next to the profile.
- Click Remove account, Continue, then Yes, remove [name].
If your account still shows the older Logging in with accounts option under Connected experiences, you can choose Manage logins and untick the accounts that shouldn't log in to Instagram instead.
How to remove a saved account from the login screen
On a shared phone, you may not want a Facebook profile appearing on Instagram's login screen.
- Open the Instagram app while logged out, on the login screen.
- Tap Settings in the top right.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Remove profile.
Keep both accounts secure
Linked logins mean one password can open two accounts, so protect them properly:
- Turn on two-factor authentication. Go to Menu > Meta Account (or Accounts Center) > Login and security > Two-factor authentication. Instagram says two-factor authentication protects your whole Meta Account, and an authentication app can be connected on up to five devices.
- Use a unique password that isn't shared with any other site.
- Never give your login to third-party apps. Follower trackers and "private profile viewers" that ask for your password put both accounts at risk. See our reviews of follower trackers and private profile viewer scams.
- Log out on shared computers. If you use Instagram in a browser, our guide to using Instagram on a computer covers safe habits.

Troubleshooting
- Facebook details don't work on Instagram. Confirm both accounts appear under Accounts Center > Accounts. If Instagram moved them into separate Accounts Centers during the 2026 change, add Facebook again.
- "Incorrect password" with the right Facebook password. Check you're entering the email or phone number from Facebook, not your Instagram username.
- Wrong Facebook account connected. Remove it from Accounts Center, then add the correct one. Only one is allowed at a time.
- Locked out after unlinking. On the login screen, tap Forgotten password?, enter your username, email or phone number, and tap Send login link.
- Menu names don't match. Instagram is rolling out Meta Account in place of Accounts Center gradually. Update the Instagram app and look for either name.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safer to log in to Instagram with Facebook?
It's more convenient, not automatically safer. Linking means one set of login details can open both accounts, so a compromised Facebook password affects Instagram too. Turn on two-factor authentication, which protects your whole Meta Account.
Can I log in to Instagram with a different Facebook account?
Only with the Facebook account in the same Accounts Center. Instagram allows one Facebook account per Accounts Center, so you'd need to remove the current one before adding another.
Will unlinking Facebook delete anything on Instagram?
Removing an account from Accounts Center doesn't delete your Instagram profile or posts. It turns off connected experiences between the accounts, such as logging in to each other.
Why can't I log in to Facebook with my Instagram details on a new phone?
Instagram notes that if two-factor authentication is on for either account, you can't use your Instagram login information to log in to Facebook on an unrecognized device. Log in with Facebook's own details and code instead.
