Instagram How-To

How to Delete Your Search History on Instagram

Quick answer: To delete Instagram search history, go to your profile, tap Menu, open Meta Account (or Accounts Center), tap Your information and permissions, then Search history, choose your account and remove searches. If that option isn't there yet, tap Menu > Your activity > Recent searches > Clear all. Cleared searches can reappear if you search them again.

Key takeaways

  • Instagram is moving search history controls into Meta Account / Accounts Center, but not everyone has them yet.
  • The fallback path is Menu > Your activity > Recent searches > Clear all.
  • Clearing is temporary: a search you run again will show up in your history again.
  • Link history from Instagram's in-app browser is a separate setting that's off by default.
  • Searching instagram.com in a web browser can also leave entries in your browser's own history.

Where Instagram stores your search history

Instagram saves what you search in Search & Explore (accounts, hashtags, places and keywords) so you can jump back to them quickly. In 2026 there are two places to manage that list, because Instagram is gradually moving account settings into Meta Account (previously Accounts Center):

  • Search history inside Meta Account or Accounts Center, where you can remove searches for each account you've added.
  • Recent searches inside Your activity, the older route that still works for accounts that haven't received the new setting.

Try the first method. If you can't find it, use the second.

How to delete search history in Meta Account or Accounts Center

On iPhone and Android

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu (three lines) in the top right.
  3. Tap Meta Account. If you see Accounts Center instead, tap that.
  4. Tap Your information and permissions.
  5. Tap Search history.
  6. Tap the Instagram account whose searches you want to clear.
  7. Tap Remove next to each search you want to delete.

If you have more than one Instagram profile or a Facebook account in the same Accounts Center, repeat step 6 for each one. Instagram notes that not everyone can access this setting yet.

On a computer

  1. On instagram.com, click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
  2. Click Meta Account or Accounts Center.
  3. Click Your information and permissions and look for Search history.

Instagram's Help Center lists these search history steps for the phone apps only. If the web version doesn't show Search history for you, use the app.

How to clear all recent searches from Your activity

This route clears everything in one go.

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
  4. Tap Recent searches.
  5. Tap Clear all, then tap Clear all again to confirm.

How to remove a single search from the search screen

When you tap the search bar, Instagram usually lists your recent searches underneath. In current app versions you can typically remove one entry by tapping the X next to it, or open the full list to clear it. The exact layout varies between app versions and the web, and Instagram's Help Center doesn't document this shortcut, so use the Your activity route above if you don't see it.

What clearing search history does and doesn't do

It does:

  • Remove past searches from your list of recent searches in Search & Explore.
  • Apply to the account, not just the phone you're holding.

It doesn't:

  • Stop future searches being saved. Instagram says clearing is temporary, and a search you run again reappears in your history.
  • Clear your browser history. If you use Instagram in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge, profile and hashtag URLs you visited can remain in the browser's own history. Clear that in your browser settings.
  • Clear link history. Links you open in Instagram's in-app browser are covered by a separate feature, described below.

Link history is a list of websites you've opened through Instagram's in-app browser in the last 30 days. It's off by default, and links opened from chats aren't saved to it. It's available in the Android and iPhone apps and is still rolling out, so you may not see it.

  1. Tap any link inside Instagram so it opens in the in-app browser.
  2. Tap the menu icon in the top right, then tap Browser settings.
  3. To turn it off, tap the toggle next to Allow link history, then tap Don't allow.

Instagram says turning link history off clears it immediately from your view, though Meta may take up to 90 days to complete deletion. While it's on, Instagram notes that link history information may be used to improve ads across Meta technologies.

Other privacy settings worth checking

If you're clearing your search history because you want more privacy, a couple of related settings are worth a look:

Troubleshooting

  • No Search history option in Meta Account or Accounts Center. Instagram is rolling this out gradually. Use Your activity > Recent searches instead.
  • No Recent searches option either. Update the Instagram app; menu names have changed several times and older versions put this elsewhere.
  • Searches came back. That happens whenever you search for the same account or tag again. Clear the list again after searching.
  • You still see suggested accounts. The search screen can show suggestions based on other activity. These aren't necessarily your past searches.
  • You want to see what you searched before clearing it. Cleared searches no longer show in your list, so screenshot your recent searches first if you need them. If you're trying to find a specific account again, our guide to searching Instagram for accounts, hashtags and posts has tips.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone see that I searched for them on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't offer any feature that tells people who searched for their profile. Your search history is a convenience list shown to you. Our explainer on whether you can see who views your Instagram covers the apps that claim otherwise.

Why do accounts still appear when I tap the search bar after clearing?

Instagram says cleared searches can reappear once you search for them again. Separately, the search screen can show suggestions that aren't your past searches, so seeing a familiar account doesn't necessarily mean your history wasn't cleared.

Does clearing search history on my phone clear it everywhere?

Search history is saved to your Instagram account rather than to a single device, so clearing it in the app or Accounts Center applies to that account. Your web browser's own history is separate and needs clearing in the browser.

Is there a way to stop Instagram saving searches at all?

Instagram's Help Center doesn't describe a setting to switch search history off, only ways to remove it. Clearing it regularly is the practical option.
