How Instagram search works in 2026
Instagram search is one bar that looks across several kinds of content at once. According to Meta's explanation of the Instagram Search system, a query can return hashtags, places, Reels, posts, profiles, audio and other results that match what you typed.
A few things shape what you see:
- Relevance to the words you typed. Matches in usernames, names, captions and hashtags all count.
- Your own activity. Accounts you've interacted with, profiles you've visited and your connections influence which accounts rank first.
- What other people click. Suggested keywords and hashtags reflect what people in your country commonly tap after similar searches.
- Safety filters. Some content and tags are filtered out or limited in search.
Because results are personalized, your results won't exactly match a friend's. Meta says the underlying models and signals change frequently, so exact behavior shifts between app versions too.
How to search on iPhone and Android
- Open Instagram and tap the Search (magnifying glass) icon in the bottom navigation.
- Tap the search bar at the top.
- Type a username, a name, a keyword like "sourdough recipe," or a hashtag like "#sourdough."
- Suggestions appear as you type. Tap one to go straight to that account, tag or place.
- For full results, press search on your keyboard. You'll see tabs across the top, such as For you, Accounts, Audio, Tags, Places and Reels. Tab names and order can vary slightly by app version and region.
Search for a hashtag
- Run the search as above.
- Open the Tags tab.
- Tap a hashtag to see its page with top posts and Reels that used it.
You don't have to type the # symbol. Typing it can help narrow suggestions to hashtags, though.
Search for posts by keyword
- Type a plain-language phrase, such as "small apartment decor."
- Press search and stay on For you or open Reels to see matching content.
Keyword results can include posts that never used a matching hashtag, because Instagram also looks at other information such as captions. This is one reason a descriptive caption matters as much as your hashtags; our hashtag research guide explains how to use both.
Search for an account
- Type the person's username or display name.
- Open the Accounts tab if they don't appear in suggestions.
- Check the profile photo, bio and follower list before following, since impersonation accounts often use near-identical usernames.
Search for places
- Type a city, venue or landmark.
- Open the Places tab and tap a result to see public posts and Reels tagged with that location.
How to search on desktop
- Go to instagram.com and log in. Search isn't available on the website without an account.
- Click Search in the left-hand menu. A search panel opens.
- Type a username, name, keyword or hashtag.
- Click a suggestion to open that profile, hashtag page or place.
Desktop search is more limited than the app's tabbed results, so if you're researching content in depth, the phone app usually gives more to work with. For more on using Instagram in a browser, see our guide to Instagram on a computer.
Search Instagram from Google or Bing
Starting July 10, 2025, Instagram began allowing search engines to show public photos and videos from certain accounts. Eligible content includes posts, Reels, carousels and related information from accounts that are:
- Public
- Professional (creator or business accounts)
- Run by someone 18 or older
Personal accounts, private accounts and teen accounts aren't included. Professional account holders can opt out in their privacy settings by turning off the option to allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results.
To use it, search Google or Bing for your topic plus "Instagram," or use the site:instagram.com operator, for example site:instagram.com sourdough scoring. Coverage depends on what search engines have indexed, so results are far less complete than searching inside the app.
Tips for better search results
- Use specific terms. "Vegan brownies no oil" returns more useful posts than "food."
- Try hashtag and keyword versions. #streetphotography and "street photography" can surface different posts.
- Check spelling variants. Many niche tags have common alternatives, such as color and colour.
- Filter by tab. If you want people, use Accounts; if you want content, use Reels or Tags.
- Browse niche hashtag pages on Task Ant for vetted starting points, like #travel or #food.
Clear or manage your search history
Instagram saves recent searches so you can repeat them. You can remove individual searches or clear them all; Meta notes that cleared searches can reappear if you search for them again. Step-by-step instructions are in our guide to clearing Instagram search history.
What Instagram search can't do
- Search inside private accounts. You'll find the profile, but not its posts, unless you're an approved follower.
- Show who looked you up. There's no official way to see who searched for or viewed your profile.
- Search by image. There's no built-in reverse image search. For finding where a photo came from, see reverse image search for Instagram.
- Show restricted hashtags normally. Some tags show limited or no results because they're associated with content that breaks the rules. Our banned hashtag checker flags commonly reported ones.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I find someone on Instagram search?
They may have changed their username, blocked you, deactivated their account, or their account may be restricted. Try searching their display name as well as their username, or ask them for their profile link. Private accounts still appear in search, but you can't see their posts unless they approve your follow request.
Can I search Instagram without an account?
Instagram search on the website requires you to log in. Without an account, the main option is a search engine: public posts from eligible professional accounts, and public profile pages, can appear in Google or Bing results.
Does Instagram show who searched for me?
No. Instagram doesn't tell people who searched for or viewed their profile. Apps that claim to show this are unreliable and can be unsafe, especially if they ask for your password.
How do I stop my posts appearing in Google?
If you have a public professional account, go to your account privacy settings and turn off the option that allows public photos and videos to appear in search engine results. Switching to a private account also removes posts from public view, and it can take time for search engines to update their results.
