YouTube Shorts Hashtags
Most popular #shorts hashtags for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Select any tags and copy them.
Quick answer: YouTube's help center defines a Short by format (square or vertical, up to three minutes) and does not list #shorts as a requirement. Hashtags still help label the topic: up to three can show by the title, and more than 60 means YouTube ignores them all. Use two or three topic tags, and optionally #shorts.

About #shorts content
Early on, many creators added #shorts to make sure a vertical video was treated as a Short. YouTube's current upload guidance describes Shorts by their length and aspect ratio instead, so the tag is optional. Some creators keep it as a format label; it does no harm, but it tells viewers nothing about the topic.
Shorts follow YouTube's general hashtag rules: tags go in the title or description, up to three considered most engaging can appear by the title, and a video with more than 60 hashtags has all of them ignored. When you create a Short in the app and start typing a hashtag, YouTube suggests tags based on your text and past uploads, which is a quick way to find relevant ones.
Because most Shorts are also posted as Reels or TikToks, the Instagram sets below show five-tag versions of common Shorts formats.
Tips for tagging Shorts posts
- Put topic tags first. Since YouTube chooses up to three hashtags to show by the title, a set of two topic tags plus #shorts keeps what appears useful. Our YouTube and Shorts hashtag guide has more detail.
- Use the in-app suggestions. When you type # while adding text to a Short, YouTube suggests hashtags; ones you used before show a clock icon.
- Write a clear title. Shorts viewers often swipe past descriptions, so the title and the first second of video do most of the explaining.
- When posting the same clip to Instagram, rebuild the set to five Instagram tags; see Reels hashtags and the TikTok hashtag page for platform differences.
Hashtags to avoid
| Hashtag | Why skip it |
|---|---|
#shortsviral | Combines a format label with a reach wish; neither describes the video. |
#sub4sub | Subscriber-exchange schemes go against YouTube's fake engagement policy. |
#shortsfeedviral2026 | Year-stamped stuffing tag that mostly collects reposted clips. |

#shorts hashtag FAQs
Do I need #shorts for a video to be a YouTube Short?
YouTube's help center describes Shorts as square or vertical videos up to three minutes and does not list #shorts as a requirement. You can include it as a label, but topic tags are more useful.
How many hashtags should a YouTube Short have?
Two to four relevant tags work well. Up to three can appear by the title, and a video with more than 60 hashtags has all of them ignored.
Can I use the same hashtags on Shorts, Reels and TikTok?
Topic tags usually transfer, but format tags do not: #shorts on Instagram or #reels on YouTube adds nothing. Instagram also caps posts at five hashtags.
