What Does IG Mean? IG and Other Instagram Abbreviations Explained

How people use "IG"

IG is the most common written shorthand for Instagram. You'll see it in a few predictable places:

• Texts and DMs: "Add me on IG," "Did you see her IG story?"
• Bios on other platforms: "IG: @username" on TikTok, YouTube or a business card.
• Captions and comments: "IG vs. reality" posts that compare a polished photo with the unedited version.

It's also used as a prefix: IG Story, IG Live, IG Reel. Hashtags like #ig and #insta exist but are extremely broad, which is why we group them under our main #instagram hashtag page with more specific alternatives.

"Insta" means the same thing and is more common in speech. "Gram," as in "do it for the gram," means doing something mainly so you can post it.

What IGTV was, and what happened to it

IGTV is the IG term people most often ask about because it no longer exists.

• June 2018: Instagram launched IGTV as a standalone app and a tab inside Instagram for longer, vertical videos. At launch, most accounts could upload videos up to 15 minutes from mobile and up to 60 minutes from the web.
• October 2021: Instagram dropped the IGTV branding and merged long-form and feed videos into a single format called Instagram Video.
• March 2022: The standalone IGTV app was removed from app stores, and Instagram shifted its video focus to Reels.

If you see "IGTV" in an old caption or link, it refers to a video that now lives on the account's profile like any other video. Today's short and long videos are shared as Reels. For format specs, see our guide to Instagram Story and post dimensions.

Common Instagram abbreviations

A few worth explaining in more detail

CF (Close Friends). Close Friends is a list you control. When you share a post, note, Reel or story to it, only people on the list can see it, and they'll see a green ring or a Close friends label. Instagram says people aren't notified when you add or remove them, and nobody can request to join.

DM. Direct messages live in the Messages tab. "Slide into the DMs" means messaging someone first, usually flirtatiously. Businesses often say "DM to order" instead of listing prices.

FYP. This is TikTok vocabulary that spilled onto Instagram because so many Reels are cross-posted. Instagram's recommendation surfaces are Explore and the Reels tab, not a "For You page," though Instagram does label some recommended content "suggested for you." Collab. On Instagram, "collab" has a specific meaning beyond "we worked together." Instagram's Collabs feature lets the creator of a post invite another account as a co-author. If they accept, their username appears on the post, it shows on both profiles, and it's shared with both sets of followers.

F4F, L4L and SFS. These signal attempts to trade engagement. They attract accounts that follow and leave quickly or never engage, and they can make a profile look spammy. Instagram's recommendation guidelines say it tries not to recommend accounts that repeatedly use misleading practices to build a following.

Instagram feature names that sound like slang

Some terms are official product names but get used casually:

• Story: A photo or video that disappears after 24 hours. You can see who viewed it for up to 48 hours via your archive.
• Highlights: Stories saved permanently to your profile.
• Reel: A short-form vertical video with editing tools, music and effects.
• Notes: Short text updates shown above your inbox.
• Broadcast channel: A one-to-many chat where a creator messages followers.
• Explore: The search and discovery tab.
• Link in bio: Not a feature by name, but the clickable links section of your profile.

Terms to be careful with

Slang shifts meaning between communities, and a few terms are easy to misread:

• "Seen" in a DM means the person opened your message. It isn't an insult by itself.
• "Soft launch" means hinting at a new relationship without showing the person's face; a "hard launch" is posting them openly.
• "Photo dump" is a casual carousel of many unrelated photos, as opposed to one polished image.
